Social Phobia (Anxiety)

Of course, there have been situations where we have been shy and timid, and this is normal. It would not be normal to label every shyness as social phobia. However, if this state of anxiety has negatively affected our social life, our interactions with people, and our business life, and increased our avoidance, we encounter social phobia anxiety. This situation, which we call social phobia, is one of the most common psychological disorders.

Those with Social Phobia:

  • Only in certain situations (giving a presentation at work, raising your hand at school) they show social anxiety behaviors, shyness and timidity
  • They care too much about the approval and opinions of others, they are sensitive
  • They have difficulty making confidants/friends outside of their families
  • They avoid situations where they will be in interpersonal communication
  • They are afraid of being emotional/looking weak or stupid in front of others and therefore are reluctant to participate in social environments
  • They avoid any situation that requires social performance demands
  • They show symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, dry mouth, muscle tension, and tremors in social environments
In fact, what is truly feared is being judged by others, being misjudged, being excluded from the group, being embarrassed by the possibility of saying something wrong, being humiliated, making a mistake and being ashamed, and the fear of offending someone else. One of the biggest fears of people with social anxiety disorder is drawing attention to themselves. They do not want to be the center of attention. Being negatively evaluated by others is disastrous for them. For this reason, they avoid social interaction or have to endure it, and this necessity brings anxiety.
